Rain Gardens
A rain garden is one of the most effective — and best-looking — ways to manage stormwater runoff on a residential or commercial property. Here's what they are, how they work, and whether one is right for your land.
What is a rain garden?
A rain garden is a shallow, planted depression designed to capture and absorb stormwater runoff from roofs, driveways, and lawns. Instead of letting that water sheet across your property or overload a storm drain, it filters slowly down through soil and plant roots — recharging groundwater and reducing erosion.
Done well, a rain garden looks like a natural garden feature. Most people wouldn't know it's doing anything but sitting there looking good.
How it works
Runoff flows into a graded depression, pools briefly, then infiltrates through a layered soil mix and plant root system over 24–48 hours.
What it handles
Roof runoff, driveway drainage, lawn sheeting, and downspout overflow — anything that tends to pond or channel across your property.
What you get
Less standing water, less erosion, healthier soil, and a planted feature that improves with age as roots establish.
Is a rain garden right for your property?
Rain gardens work well in most WNC yards, but they're not a universal fix. They perform best when:
You have a defined runoff source — roof, driveway, or sloped lawn — to direct toward the garden
Your soil has reasonable drainage (we test before we design — clay-heavy sites may need an amended mix)
You have at least 10–30 sq ft of usable space
You're open to native or adaptive plants — lower maintenance and better for infiltration than turf
If your site has heavy clay, steep slopes, or standing water that never drains, a rain garden alone may not be the right answer. We'll tell you that up front and recommend what will actually work.
What installation involves
We size the garden to your drainage area, test your soil, and design a planting plan suited to WNC's climate. Installation typically takes one to two days for a residential site. We handle grading, amended soil mix, overflow routing, and planting — and we leave you with a garden that looks intentional from day one.
